HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar: Date Night, Filipino Style

For a night out in the city, Halina offers something different from the usual date-night menu: modern Filipino cooking, cocktails built on calamansi and ube, and desserts served in coconut shells. The restaurant is on East Hastings Street in Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood.

The Setting

Hand-painted tropical leaf mural above a rattan banquette in the Halina dining room

A hand-painted tropical mural sets the tone in the dining room, with rattan banquettes, upbeat music and a lively but welcoming energy. Halina sums up its style as bold flavours, modern heritage and Filipino warmth.

Four friends built it after starting out with a small takeout and catering business called Bigboy’s Chigs To-Go.

Mango Kilig dessert at Halina, set on ice and topped with crumble and a cookie brittle wafer

Mango Kilig

Kilig is the Filipino word for that giddy, butterflies feeling. This dessert brings mango, sago pearls and cookie brittle in a coconut shell.

Save Room for Dessert

The dessert list, called panghimagas on the menu, also includes Ube Cassava Cake with latik (coconut caramel) and Halo-Halo, the Filipino shaved-ice dessert with nata de coco, macapuno and sweet beans.

Something to Drink

Try the Ube Margarita, the Pandan Spritz or the Spiced Kape Martini, or the A LâQUE sparkling apple mango wine, made in Canada by Filipino creators. The zero-alcohol list is just as considered.
